The Value of Keeping Kids in Worship Service

The large church we attended for nearly 20 years when my kids were younger encouraged you to put your kids class for the service rather than bring them into the service. At the smaller church we now attend, kids {Kindergarten and up} sit in the worship service.

I have come to really appreciate the value of having your kids sit with you in the service. Yes, there is more noise and movement, but there are such wonderful conversations we can have with our kids. They also get to hear truths and experience things that they may not get to otherwise.

Just as one example, all four of my kids told me not too long ago that they don’t remember seeing someone get baptized when they were younger. This is because the culture of the church we attended was that there was greater value in keeping your kids separate from you during the worship service.

I’m not putting the full blame on the church we attended. We, as parents, still had a choice to bring them in the service with us. I’m just saying that it was rare that kids were in the service.

On the one hand, we must teach our kids how to sit and listen. Also at the same time, we want to make sure our expectations are developmentally appropriate. {The service won’t be silent. Kids will naturally need to get up and use the bathroom.}

This also means we can provide our kids some tools and resources to help them engage in the service. A couple years ago, I created some printable Sermon Notes for kids, teens, and adults. Feel free to download those.

Today, I’m sharing another resource that is perfect for engaging kids…Sermon BINGO game boards!

In this FREE pack, you’ll find six different Sermon BINGO game boards. Younger learners can cross off the words on their board as they hear them. Older learners {even teens} can jot tally marks in the spaces for the number of times they hear a word spoken. {See image below.}

The goal, of course, is to get our kids to focus in and listen, not just keep them busy until lunch. I pray this will be a helpful resource as you train up your child or work with parents in the ministry where God has you.
