Ideas for Reading the Bible

In my blog post, How to READ the Bible, one of the ways we should teach kids to read the Bible is A, which stands for read All of the Bible.

Understanding the overarching story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation helps us see how certain concepts or characters are connected and how they fit into the bigger story. Augustine once said, “The New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed. The Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed.” The Old and New Testaments cannot be disconnected from each other! As you read each day, look for repeating ideas and themes as you read and connections to other Bible verses and passages.

If you need some ideas for reading all of the Bible, here are a few ideas.

1- Read the entire Bible in one year.

You can use a chronological Bible reading plan.

The Blue Letter Bible also has many reading plans for reading through the Bible in a year…and you can start ANY time of the year! I love that this plan helps you see the storyline of the Bible to better understand the Bible as a whole. If you’re a list maker, this plan works VERY well.

2- Read different parts of the Bible each day of the week.

Sunday- Read the passage your pastor preaches on
Monday- Read from the first five books of the Bible (Genesis – Deuteronomy)
Tuesday- Read from the historical books of the OT (Joshua – Esther)
Wednesday- Read from the poetic books/wisdom books of the OT
Thursday- Read from the prophetic books (Isaiah through Malachi)
Friday- Read from the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
Saturday-Read from the rest of the NT (Acts through Revelation)

Read as much or little each day; it may take more than a year and that’s ok. If you’re not a list maker, this plan may work better for you than #1.

3- Take more than a year to read through the Bible.

John MacArthur shares in his short book, How to Study the Bible, that he reads through the entire Old Testament every year. Since there are 39 books of the OT, that means he reads through about three~ish Old Testament books a month.

He also reads through one book of the New Testament each month. He reads it as many times as he can during that month. For shorter books, like Jude, you could potentially read it thirty-one times in a row. For longer books, like the Gospels, it would be split it into smaller chunks and you read through the chunks as many times as you can in one month.

4- A summer reading plan might be just the thing to get your kids hooked on reading God’s Word. I have free reading plans you can download and use.

As your kiddos read through the Bible {however they decide to do it}, they can keep track of their reading with this simple Read & Color page.
