Raising Rooted Disciples

About

Welcome to Raising Rooted Disciples! My name is Becky Spence, and I’m thrilled you’re here!

I am first and foremost a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. My highest goal in life is to glorify the LORD in everything I do. Whether it was changing diapers as a young mama to teaching Sunday School to middle schoolers, no matter where I am or what I do, I desire lift His Name high.

I’m FAR from perfect in reaching this goal {just ask my four kids}, but I press on each and every day.

You may already know me from my first website, This Reading Mama, where I’ve shared hands-on resources for mamas and teachers alike since 2011.

About Me

I grew up in a Christian home with parents who not only taught me WHAT the Bible says, but WHY I can trust what the Bible says. Knowing the WHAT of my faith and the WHY behind it gave me a rooted Biblical worldview that has shaped me into the person I am today.

Learn more about what I believe.

When I’m not writing, creating, or homeschooling, I enjoy:

  • reading God’s Word. I love reading the truth found in God’s Word. Simply put, if you want to know God, read His Word.
  • buying books. I am seriously addicted to buying theology and apologetics books. {I once saw a t-shirt that read, “I have no shelf-control.” That would be me.}
  • reading books. I’m usually reading about 5-6 at a time.
  • exercising. I love taking walks as well as lifting weights.
  • homesteading. I want to be good at gardening, but I’m really not. We do have backyard chickens and meat chickens. I also enjoy making homemade bread.
  • playing card games. Nertz is my all-time favorite.
  • teaching the Bible. I love, love, love teaching God’s Word to others. I currently co-teach a women’s group and a middle school Sunday School class.
  • decorating the house and dreaming up big projects for my husband. He loves it when I do that…Ha!
  • hosting family and friends in our home. We started a “house church” in the summer of 2020, and it was such a blessing!

Why Raising Rooted Disciples?

For me, one of the saddest verse in all of Scripture is Judges 2:10. It states, “And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that He had done for Israel.” {ESV}

This verse is a vital reminder that we’re only ONE GENERATION AWAY from forgetting the Lord and what He has done.

This is why from the beginning to the end, the Bible commands that parents instruct their children in the ways of the Lord. The church has a role, for sure, but PARENTS should be the main disciplers in their children’s lives.

When each of our kids was dedicated at church, we were asked to pick out a Bible verse that would be the focus of our parenting. After reading Colossians 2:7 in the New Living Translation, it quickly became the verse for ALL FOUR of our kids’ baby dedications.

Colossians 2:7 ~ Raising Rooted Disciples

Colossians 2:7 says, “Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” {NLT} What a beautiful truth to live by!

We must disciple our kids to build their lives on Christ, rooted in a reasonable faith. This starts right in the home! And this is what I hope to help you do with Raising Rooted Disciples.
