The Trinity Diagram

The word trinity (or tri-unity) is the Biblical teaching that there is ONE GOD in THREE PERSONS. The word trinity is not directly in the Bible, but neither are the words omniscient nor omnipresent. We these words to describe concepts from the entirety of the Bible.

The concept of the Trinity is difficult for us to wrap our minds around. {And for good reason. We’re talking about God here.} I like to say there’s no way to explain The Trinity, but we can give examples of Scripture and how we know it’s true.

 

A simple way to think of the Trinity is ONE “What” with THREE “Who’s” or Persons.

God is ONE Being or ONE “What.” Another way to say it is that God is “one in nature,” “one in substance,” or “one in essence.”

God is THREE “Who’s.” The three Persons of the Godhead are God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. The Persons of the Trinity are equal (all three are fully God) and eternal. (Psalm 90:2, John 1:2, and Hebrews 9:14.)

While all three Persons ARE GOD in their “What” (or Being, Equalness, Eternalness), they have distinct roles in their Personhood. For example, God the Father IS NOT God, the Son (Jesus). God the Father did not die on the cross. The Holy Spirit is not God the Father. And Jesus is NOT The Holy Spirit.

A helpful book {in the image above} related to the doctrine of the Trinity is James White’s book, The Forgotten Trinity. I will say it is not a light read, so be prepared. 🙂

I pray that this Trinity diagram can help you teach this doctrine. Again, there is an optional teaching script with Scriptures I’d encourage you and your learners to read aloud.
